An Escape Artist

I am escape artist. I’ve had seventy- nine years of practice in escaping what some call reality. I see things my way first. Then I am able to see them in another way and sometimes, in several other ways, double take and triple take. I know there are many ways of seeing or experiencing the same thing. I consider diversity a blessing.

I spend time each day walking in the watershed, woods and neighborhoods that surround the 1960’s cul-de-sac where we live now. Before now, our family lived on the edge of town, on six wooded acres with a creek out back. Lyle our two sons and I lived with wild deer, possums, hawks and coyotes and our own dogs, cats, chickens and goats. We grew much of our food and drank water from a well. As a result I have become highly panentheistic. That is to say, if I understand my Franciscan Guide, Richard Rohr, God lives within me, you, everyone else and all creation. This world is drenched in God. Every living thing is sacred.

I believe this and fumble with it. We live in a 1960’s house built on what once were forested wetlands. I garden some but have lost the art of growing our food and composting. I do not know how to cope with all of our garbage, with poisoned animal traps, hunting for sport and seasoning the earth with poisoned bait to rid of rats and other pests. I do not know so I am not here to give advice. Perhaps I am here to remind myself I can do better, or maybe just to escape into memories of who we were and dreams of who we might be.
