Broken Promises

She liked traditions, but was also open to new ideas. Planning on a career and not a family, she was beside herself when the career didn’t pan out, but a marriage proposal did.
He was a gentleman. Although they did not have much in common, other than interests in travel and music, he wooed her and she fell for it.

The fact that he had had two, short-lived, previous marriages should have been a warning sign about getting involved. The bursts of anger were even more worrisome. But she wanted to change her life and accepting his proposal did just that.

The marriage was not a good one, but they had four children, all boys, in whom she invested all of her energy when she realized that the husband was not only a liar, but a serial cheater. He lied about cheating, but got caught in his own web of untruths. He did not honor and obey, love and cherish as he promised to. Perhaps she would have felt differently if they had not had a traditional marriage. They could have lived together and had kids, after all, without having made the vows which she honored. It would have been much easier for her to walk away.

She stayed because of the kids. They grew up, left home, went to university and began their lives elsewhere.
She moved on. Life moved on. The boys found their own partners and luckily, understood the seriousness of their commitments. They were not like their father.
