I was a fundamentalist as a teen - really. Independent Fundamentalist Churches of America.
We were taught a God running a justice system whose only grace or mercy was in the interposition of a sacrifice of God himself to himself (all male too). And you'd better not pile more on that burden.
That's only one way to be law-based, "fire insurance Christianity". The thinking here is saving people from eternal torment, and with that thinking, any intervention short of eternal torment is a good exchange.
This thinking justified the Inquisition, and it justifies conversion camps and laws that raise mental health and suicide numbers, with the hope that some souls will be saved from eternal torment.
Then there's the side of Grace, where the only law that matters is love, and acceptance and inclusion are the standards of the church.
This thinking justifies bishops who are hard pressed to explain how they understand whether and how Christ is divine. It hopes that loved people who feel safe and enfranchised will work for the Kin-dom.
