No Labels

I grew up in a middle class beach community in Southern California.
The 60’s were turbulent times, but we were very carefree as children and it was a wonderful place to grow up. We kids had no idea what was going on in Watts. The Vietnam war was in full swing.

My father grew up in a country where he was in the minority. My mother’s father had had the same experience in his homeland of the Martinique. Race was never an issue in our family. We did not label people.

It was many years later, at a high school reunion, that I learned that one friend was Jewish, another identified as Catholic and several had come out as being gay. I
myself am a straight, caucasian, Episcopalian, but have never considered that a big deal.
I had no idea throughout childhood into early adulthood that people had “labels.” It never mattered to me.
It still doesn’t.

Your skin can be any color, you can love who you choose, and worship how you wish. As long as you are a decent person, I will never label you.
