A lot of things and people disappeared during the pandemic. What a strange 3 years it was! Although teaching via Zoom was not appealing to me, it did allow me to keep my job.
When my elderly mother needed help, I was able to go stay with her and work from there. That sounded great, but I was working in a time zone 9 hours into the future and had to be up from midnight to 9 a.m. local time. This was exhausting.
I always enjoyed the face-to-face contact with my students and Zoom allowed instruction, but none of the trust and confidence building that I was used to instilling in them. I also had to rework all of my lesson plans. It just wasn’t the same.
I can say that my vocation disappeared during the pandemic. When we had the chance to go back into the classroom, albeit with masks, things were better, but still not like before. I stuck it out through the 2020-21 school year, then stopped. I no longer had the enthusiasm and the students lacked the motivation I expected of them. It was sad to leave my school. My director told me that the door would always be open if I wanted to return, but I have not. Early retirement suits me.
