Slip From Your Mind
By: N.L. Skjonsby
Memories are severely under-rated, until you lose one. I have joked for years that I can’t learn anything new without forgetting something I used to know. “Only so much room in this melon, you know.” It seem for me that smells and songs help me to set memories and these same things help to recall those memories at a later time.
I have referred to my childhood as “Leave it Beaver-ish”. Two parents, an older brother and younger Sister. A stable home with a pet and little-league or a community pool to keep us busy. We had a lot of kids on our street and there was always something to do outside.
Growing up in the 70’s and early 80’s was an incredible experience, and although I didn’t choose my friends very wisely, we were a tight nit bunch for a while. It seems like I packed in the most memories during this time. These friends were what shaped me. We survived and grew and learned together. Some of us grew up faster than others but we all survived and we had fun.
I remember my brother picking on me or beating me up, as kids do. It wasn’t until he left for college that I realized how much I like him. We have been good friends ever since. My biggest regret in life is my sister. She is five years younger than me and absolutely amazing. Something about the age difference made us not very close. She was just a kids when I was busy with my friends and by the time I was old enough to appreciate her she had gone off to college in another state. After college she settled into her new town and we only saw each other a few days at a time after that. We have never had the opportunity to really get to know each other. What I do know, I love and I wish we had more memories to share.
