Utterly Estranged
By: N.L. Skjonsby
Self-isolated, Ostracized, or Estranged, are different forms of the same thing. Some of us chose to alienate our selves from others and some of us get alienated by others. If we get singled out or alienated it is usually because of our own choices, so can we really blame others?
It is smart to separate yourself from harm or mistreatment and sometimes this requires divorcing yourself from another person. I have several in-laws that are estranged from my immediate family. Some have chosen to just not associate with us and others have burned bridges and are not welcome.
This hurts me deeply, as I have fond memories of these people and do not see anything done or perceived to have been done as worthy of ending a family relationship over. On the other hand, I have chosen sides also and support my immediate family in their choices. I think for me it comes down to forgiveness. I am quick to forgive. I may not ever forget, but forgiveness to me is given and rarely earned. I forgive because it makes me feel better, purely selfish for the most part.
No one is asking but if you were, my advice would be to forgive each other and appreciate the good in everyone. If you can spend time with people and not be in danger or suffer abuse, do it!
