I have been involved in a lot of volunteer work since I was young. I find giving ones time freely is a wonderful and generous act. We all complain about not having enough time to do the things we want to do. When one gives time, whether it be occasional or hours a day, one connects with others in a way that is priceless, literally. Volunteering feels good, contributes to the greater good and can be a lot of fun!
I have volunteered for years with my sports clubs. I like the people I interact with. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for sports and exercising is great for all ages.
I have also given my time freely for big events like the World Special Olympics, the 2015 European Master Games, the Euro2016 tournament and the FIFA 2019 Women’s World Cup. I am currently signed up as a spectator services volunteer for the 2023 Rugby World Cup and this morning sent in my application to be a Paris 2024 Olympics volunteer. People don’t always realize that the organization of these big events relies tremendously on volunteers who give their time for free. It is also a wonderful learning experience. Being a part of something “big” can also give one a sense of belonging.
Best of all, I live giving my time freely to my friends and family. As I write, I am sitting next to my daughter-in-law who is sleeping after knee surgery. I am grateful that I can be here to help her and my son. They need the help! My hands are full, but my arms are open wide.
