The job was coming to an end. The Medical Office building was almost complete and Doctors were starting to move in. As an electrician, I had worked on this project since they first scraped dirt 16 months earlier. The project was in Houston, TX where I live but the contractor was from Tennessee and they traveled from job to job all across the US.
I was called into the jobsite trailer/office and told this would be my last week with the company unless I wanted to travel. The next job was in Hawaii and I could start out there next week. I was 20 years old an avid surfer and engaged to be married on November 30, 1985.
While I appreciated the offer, I never really considered it. There was plenty of work in Houston, so I stayed and jot a job at another local contractor. I have had a great career and eventually moved from Houston but I took my wife and kids with me. I have been married now for over 37 years, have two great kids and two beautiful grandkids.

I was getting nervous about being married at the age of 20, and now of being unemployed also, I broke off the engagement and went to Hawaii. I worked as a traveling electrician for 30 plus years before my body just couldn’t take it anymore. Now I work at an electrical supply house and still surf whenever possible.
