One of the more interesting classes I took years ago in college was Soil Science. People underestimate the importance of soil. It is necessary for growing food to feed everyone on the planet. Soil that is not healthy is not productive.
Soil is full of microorganisms. It contains minerals, organic matter and water. Creatures dig through it and allow oxygen to penetrate the ground. It effects climate change because it absorbs carbon. Rising sea levels change the composition of soil.
Modern agricultural practices have degraded the soil through the use of fertilisers and pesticides and, in some cases, simply overuse of the land. Heavy rain on damaged soil runs off, taking chemicals with it into our waterways. This causes other problems.
If farming does not change its ways, the earth’s soils will not be able to grow enough food to sustain us.
Organic farming is a solution to bring back soil health. It helps preserve the organic composition of soil without the use of chemicals.
Some soils are useful for building materials and clay objects.
Soil is also a sacred resource. First Peoples around the earth respect and protect the land.
“You are dust and to dust you shall return.” I think we are from soil and to soil we will return.
It’s not just dirt!
